The Gaumont-Starlight-produced war drama series “In Her Car” relies on a virtual production workflow with a Screenberry media server at its core.

Consisting of 10 episodes, each spanning 25 minutes, the series is based on true events lived by Ukrainians during the first days and weeks of the full-scale Russian invasion. The narrative centers around therapist Lydia, who uses her car to transport civilians to safer places. Each episode portrays a single ride, with each passenger sharing their own touching story.

To film most of the in-vehicle driving sequences, the production team opted for an LED volume stage powered by a Screenberry media server at One Location studio. The virtual production technique offered several advantages, including high-quality reflections and shadows, better actor performances, and more efficient production timelines.

One Location is the biggest xR and virtual production studio in Ukraine. It has been working with Screenberry since its foundation in 2020. The studio’s LED volume consists of five high-resolution LED screens (three walls, a floor, and a ceiling). At the heart of the setup is a single Screenberry media server.

“Screenberry is vital to our virtual production pipeline, particularly for shooting realistic car driving scenes. We appreciate its ability to play high-resolution video smoothly and its advanced 3D mapping tools for precise alignment of graphics with the LED volume. Moreover, Screenberry's client-server architecture provides us with great flexibility on set, allowing us to control the media server from any computer or even from a smartphone.”

“In Her Car” is the first joint European-Ukrainian production of this scale. Directed by Eugin Tunic and co-produced by Gaumont, the first and oldest film company in the world, and Starlight Media, Ukraine’s largest media producer, the series received support from public broadcasters across Europe. On February 21, 2024, it debuted simultaneously across Germany, France, Switzerland (SRF), and Scandinavia on public channels such as SVT (Sweden), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), and NRK TV (Norway). Subsequently, it aired in Iceland on RÚV and in Japan on NHK.
